So there’s omnivore and carnivore and now there’s locavore. What on earth does that mean? I have been a co-op member for years and didn’t pay much attention to the term until lately. I had to look to Wiki online for a full definition of the term: Local food (also regional food or food patriotism) or the local food movement is a “collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies - one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place”[1] and is considered to be a part of the broader sustainability movement. It is part of the concept of local purchasing and local economies, a preference to buy locally produced goods and services. Those who prefer to eat locally grown/produced food sometimes call themselves locavores or localvores.[2] So I am a locavore! I translate locavore into being someone who cares about where their food comes from and the effect it’s going to have on my body. It means I prefer to support my economy by purchasing food from local sources as much as possible. In the past I have driven nearly an hour one way for fresh milk and have volunteered my home as a drop site for farms. I’d do it again if it wasn’t for the co-op that opened in our neighborhood!
