Defining Depression And The Concepts Involving It
Depression is an equal opportunity illness. It affects people in all age brackets, races and socio-economic groups. It’s hard to say what causes depression since it can depend on the person. Someone can be temporarily sad without feeling the full-on effects of depression. Other times the sadness can linger and turn into a more serious problem.
The adult symptoms of depression are sadness, guilt, hopelessness, worthlessness, anxiety, irritability, fatigue and helplessness. They may no longer find enjoyment in their hobbies or interests, have trouble concentrating, experience short term memory loss and have difficulty making decisions.
These feelings and behaviors may sometimes be apparent to friends and family if they are paying attention. The problem is that many people suffering from depression deny it. They ignore the symptoms and continue on as though nothing is wrong.
When you’re talking about children and depression, the symptoms can be similar to adults. Youth may feel cranky and irritable. Like adults they can lose interest in their favorite past times or friends.
Children may complain of headaches and stomachaches, as well. Their performance in school can also an indicator of a depression. If they start skipping school, their grades drop or if they act out it could be because of depression.
Children suffering from depression may turn to music to reinforce the negative feelings they are having. They may talk about running away or committing suicide. They may attempt both.
You may not make a habit of looking for the warning signs of depression, but it never hurts to be aware of them. Anyone can become depressed.
Sometimes pivotal moments in someone’s life will trigger depression. This can include a death, abuse, an attack or experience a disaster like hurricane Katrina. Be sure to keep your eyes open if anyone you know is going through a hard time. You may be able to get them help before it’s too late.
